Bees as indicators of pollution at Hamburg airport

Bees play an important role in measuring environmental conditions. As an example, at the airport of Hamburg thousands of bees dedicated to their usual activity as honey producers serve as pollution level indicators from the area

Impossible before the takeoff and landing of airplanes, they are dedicated to collecting the nectar of flowers of about 12 square kilometers around the airport. The honey they produce gives us a very interesting information on the presence of metals and other contaminants in the area.

The honey collection and analysis process it is called biomonitoring and its results give us light on whether the pollution levels in the area are within acceptable values.

Bees also fulfill another mission, Since the approximately 160 kilos of honey produced per year, is packaged to give to customers, suppliers and workers.
